Shingles and Sweden
2008-07-31
It’s 4am and I am shattered. I have been diagnosed with Shingles (Stress, tiredness related illness) and I am on the move again for a mammoth trip to Mexico. I leave here at 6am, fly to Amsterdam, then London, Calgary, and then have a night in my old stomping ground of Houston. Few hours sleep and a nice short flight to Monterrey. ...more

2008-07-28
I was going to write this blog after my trip to the States, however I find myself stuck, bored and unable to sleep on the floor of Amsterdam airport at 2am, so no better time to write and portray the glamour of tennis! A quick recap of my whereabouts. After Wimbledon, I came to the decision to stop playing singles, or at least stop preparing for singles and having any expectations. ...more
RETIRING
2008-07-01
I think we should all agree or, as close to agreeing as possible, the month of June was probably our best yet! The girls proved to a lot of people (I hope) that they do have the abilities to go all the way, to break not only the top 100, but even higher! Anne continued her progress and showed she too can compete on grass, and not only competes, but she can reach finals of tournaments and push the likes of Venus to the very limit. Watching Anne on center was simply incredible, she looked great out there, certainly looked like she belonged and the same can be said for all the girls. ...more

After reading the various posts on THE website, hearing the same questions, statements being made around this time of year and also pre-empting the abuse all of us will get over the next month, I thought I would writeJ I can’t really speak on behalf of the juniors, I am not at Roehampton enough to see their desire or need to compete, but I am very qualified to comment on the “over the hill girls” (anyone over the age of 18 nowadays, which makes me ancient!). ...more
Mexico
2008-05-19
My experiences of Mexico have left me with a love and a great fear of the country. From bouts of dysentery, almost collapsing in the street wearing only a vest top and tartan pajamas, cracking a rib, 10-hour bus journeys. To players being carted off to hospitals, unbearable temperatures, cock roaches flying at you when you’re trying to serve, bumpy internal flights, men whistling and staring, to a fervor for tennis which is both intoxicating and flattering. ...more

ITALY $25
2008-02-29
Heading back to Italy, we all knew it was going to be a difficult week. Not because the tournament was playing a lot stronger than a $25, but because we were in Italy and most Italian tournaments are terrible. ...more

As much as I hate flying, I actually enjoyed my flight from London to Stockholm and it is one of the main reasons I enjoy doing what I am doing. I sat next to two very diverse, interesting people, one who was just returning from Islamabad, and the other who was a stockbroker in London and a DJ in his spare time (Used to travel with Boney M). ...more

2008-02-10
My goal for this year is to try to play without any injuries! Easy for some, but for me, it tends to be a very difficult task, more difficult than hitting backhands! Last year I played 7 weeks without any pain; those 7 weeks were my best throughout the year and came at the very beginning. After that, it was one thing after the other and it only became worse, taking its toll mentally on me at the beginning of this year. ...more

Flying at the best of times is tiring, but flying with an illness and at 2am, makes life even harder. I was not looking forward to the journey from India to Korea, the 9-hour flight time was difficult to digest, even on a healthy stomach, however I would have walked if it meant getting out of there. We left at 2am, arrived 3 hours later in Bangkok, changed planes, took off again for Tepei and finally arrived in Seoul at 4pm, before catching a bus for 2 and a half hour trip to the hotel! ...more

2007-10-02
I began writing this blog and within 30 minutes, I had already accumulated 4 pages, speaking little about the match and more about the conditions we had to play under. I will try to condense it and maybe, you can all buy the book I am writing, later on. ...more
Portugal
2007-08-09
I headed to Portugal via bus, which turned out to be a slightly scary 5-hour journey. After 1 hour of speeding, the bus driver stops for lunch and a beer! I prayed I had not inadvertently bought a ticket for the booze cruise and the alcoholic Portuguese bus driver, who had to quench his thirst every hour of the journey, would get me there in one piece! ...more
The Rain in Spain.....
2007-08-09
My trip to Spain began early, however I was motivated by the thought of sunshine and lazing around the pool on my day off. We land amongst dark clouds, wind, and rain and my mood follows with it, so much for my day off. ...more
CATCH UP!
2007-08-02
It has been a while since I have written and this is down to how hectic and stressful the grass court season is. Unlike any foreign player, where the grass court season is simply another week in the tennis calendar, for the British player, it becomes a merry go round of he said-she said, where sane people those their heads and the press finally have something to write about. ...more
Korea Third week
2007-05-25
By now, we were counting the days down to leave; well to be honest I think we had since the day we arrived. However, it was getting closer now, so the counting was becoming that little bit louder and more frequent. The week began well, the usual tennis player excitement of reaching a new destination, the tiredness from travelling and the renewed hope that you may actually do ok this week. ...more
Second Week in Hell, Korea. Sorry.
2007-05-12
After spending 6 and a half hours on a supposedly 4 and a half hour bus journey, we finally reach our new destination. It had been an interesting trip, speeding past cars at break neck speed, on a bus with purple, 1970s style curtains and stopping in random “little chef stops” where blaring out from the music systems were English nursery rhymes, slightly odd, slightly spooky and slightly reminiscent of a horror movie. I had twinkle twinkle little star stuck in my head for the rest of the evening. ...more
South Korea.Week One
2007-05-03
It is always difficult flying across the world and not having any physical problems at the end of the journey. To make matters worse, at the end of a long flight you have the strenuous task of carrying or rather dragging 3 heavy bags to your final destination. On many occasions I have caused injury (shoulder tear) due to the amount at which I have taken with me, so this time I thought I’d be smart and take only the bear minimum. ...more

2007-04-30

Greece
2007-04-09
Arriving in Greece was always going to be fun, stressful and tiring. Ann and I began our journey by scouring the internet for 4 hours, trying to find the cheapest and most convenient way of travelling. Obviously these two ideals rarely go hand in hand and a compromise has to be made somewhere a long the line, usually for tennis players the compromise is always; convenience. ...more
Tenerife
2007-03-28
As you have read from my previous entry, the week didn’t start too well and should really have been a warning sign for what was to come. In all honesty, the tournament pretty much epitomized how we believe we are often seen; average players who are not on the WTA Tour, who make do with below-average courts, balls and facilities (deserving little more than park courts and chewed up balls.) ...more
Gran Canaria
2007-03-19
I was excited to head to Gran Canaria, with the thought of sun, sea and sand predominant in my mind. However, I was also aware of the name tag the island came with and I am sorry to say it didn’t disappoint. Obviously I am extremely bias towards Budva, Montenegro and urge anyone who hasn’t tried it, to visit. I am sure you too will fall in love with the place (By the way, our 2 bedroom apartment will be built by Sept, so anyone who wants to stay, fill in the forms on lusciousmontenegro.com) how’s that for a plugJ ...more
American Tour.
2007-03-11
I have just returned from a 7 week trip to North America; which was not only amazingly enjoyable but also profitable in terms of strength of matches and points gained. Whenever you schedule tournaments in America, you always know the trip will be demanding, every match competitive, against highly ranked players or even worse, up and coming juniors. ...more

The four weeks during June are perhaps the most; grueling, exciting, and exhausting weeks of the year. Wimbledon: Enough Said :-)
2006-07-05
I had always visualized winning a round at the Wimbledon, jumping up and down, waving to the crowd and giving a little bow, whilst being amazingly composed, cool, calm and collected! Little did I know that I would simply be trying to prevent myself from crying in front of a few hundred people! I would love to relive the moment, because to be honest it went by in such a blur-I feel cheated;) ...more

Thoughts on tennis, and what comes next……
2006-05-31
From this 5 week trip I have come to realise a few things about tennis, which are both encouraging and also exasperating. Any player of my standard, (and by that I mean someone who is capable of being top 100, but it will take time) needs that little bit of luck to push them up the rankings. ...more

Fukuoka, Japan $50,000
2006-05-31

Greece $25,000
2006-04-26
My trip to Greece once again began with a very early morning, two flights and a train journey. Putigano $25,000
2006-04-20
Travelling the world is probably one of the biggest reasons I love what I do- I meet new people, try new foods and attempt to compete in a totally different environment to the one I'm accustomed to. Italy began in the usual kind of way- early morning, long bus journey, long plane journey, long train journey, overload of sandwiches, dehydration and late arrival of the tournament transport, whilst I waited in a smoky, betting shop, surrounded by a strange number of Italian men, dressed in long leather jackets and orange sweaters (my guess-the mafia bosses of Bari!). ...more
